Resistance bands are inexpensive, easy to use and effective for a total-body workout. They work at home, in a hotel room or in a gym and can support many styles of training, from kickboxing and yoga to endurance and CrossFit-style sessions.

Example movements

For a standing oblique crunch, stand on the band and hold the ends taut while alternately lifting a knee toward the waist. The movement trains the arms, side body and quads together.

For a band chest fly, stand on the middle of the band, hold an end in each hand and cross the ends into an X. With elbows bent at roughly 90 degrees, move the arms toward the centre of the chest and return to the starting position.

Training notes

Form and tempo matter. Move deliberately rather than rushing, and keep the band under control throughout each repetition. The combination of elevated heart rate and resistance work can support fat-burning and muscle-building goals while remaining relatively easy on the joints.
